Default I can smell my own -none most of the time

Hello all,
I'm not into using pheromones and I've registered here only to ask about my problem. The thing is, I can smell my own smell (quite frequently), which thru years was hard to defined. About two months ago I stumbled on androstenol and androstenone description and it clicked.
I tried to find the way to minimize the 'emission', only with partial success.
I tried everything conventional, which basically is frequent changing and numerous showers. Using antiperspirant on numerous body parts apparently helps to a certain degree, though I'm not sure if it's reliable. Simply using it on armpits doesn't solve the problem anyway.
I tried to google some solution, without success. Now I'm here. Hello once again.
So my problem is: I can smell my own body (musky and/or urinous fragrance) and I fear others can too. Question is: can I controll it without resorting to smear antiperspirant all over my body?
Any ideas?
Thank you for reading, and I'm sorry if my english is not entirely correct.

I am a lady, and I know that men's bodies are waaaay different, but I'll go out on a limb here. Also, your English is very good.

Do you shower every day? I personally believe that it's helpful if people bathe every day with a good soap. I would recommend trying a stronger soap and washing your entire body with it. I live in the United States, and almost everyone I know wears deodorant. I would wash well with a stronger soap, and use a washcloth to help bathe yourself more thoroughly.

Maybe I'm biased because I'm American, but I bathe every day with lots of soap lather, rinse well, and use a good deodorant.

You could also try changing your diet in addition to bathing and using deodorant. Do you eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day?

how often do you shower? no offence, but smelling your own pheromone signiture is pretty extraordinary... you sure its not BO? or your diet? maybe you have changed it? eating certain foods can change the chemical secretions, including the smell.

also, do you sweat alot? some people do have a problem with sweating profusely..

another thing that tends to change the bodys chemical secretions is stress and fear, ive noticed this on a very intuitive level, ive worked as a body guard and crowd controller in the past, and apart from body language, the scent of fear is very real, also the scent of panic, I cant put my finger on it, but in my dealings with the public I have come across individuals that give off a scent that is very stale and noticeable when under extreme stress, fear or panic

fear and panic tend to be at the moment emotions, they dont tend to last very long, but stress can last a very long time, especially emotional stress

im not suggesting that this is the case with you, but explore all the options..

Welllll ... doesn't everybody smell their own smell? I don't think that's unusual, at least for those of us who are oriented to smell at all - and apparently you are one of us!

How do you know what you are smelling is -none in particular? (you have more pheromones coming off of you than just -none)

Has anyone ever told you that your smell, or how much you smell, is unusual? Do you have someone you can safely ask? If not, try asking your doctor - they'll be honest with you.

I will say that wearing synthetic pheromones (which I realize you're not doing) will make your body scent a bit stronger.

If you want to eliminate body odor as much as possible - which probably isn't such a good idea, in my opinion; it's part of how humans communicate with each other, after all - you can use deodorant soaps and never wear an article of clothing more than once without laundering it.

For creating a more pleasant body odor, clean up your diet. Meat, alcohol, coffee, spices, onions and garlic, fried food, dairy (all the good stuff, darn) will make you smell stronger. Work out a lot so you keep your sweat flowing freely and it doesn't get so concentrated. Drink 2 to 3 liters of water a day.

It is actually very difficult to smell our own smell or what we give off, we become desensitized to it, and accustomed to it, unless that smell is BO, and even then, I know of people that cant smell thier own BO, In the past ive actually gone out and purchased an anti deodorant and on purpose left it on the desk of a work mate, as a HINT.

Here is a simple analogy, have you ever walked into a friends home that you visit frequantly, and thier dwelling has a very distinctive scent that is always there each and every time you visit? yet they cant smell it, but you can!! I know I have experinced this, and still do.

Carrie, vegetarians, or others that abstain from meat, garlic and other animal produce dont always smell cleaner or better, believe me, ive come across a few hippy types that are full vegans but stink to my nose.

Just some trivia, Asians that live in Asia tend to feel offended and put off by the smell of a western individual or rather a westerner with a western type diet, apparently this is because they cannot tolerate the smell of Lactose, and most westerners drink milk in one form or another which ofcourse contains Lactose, and 90%-100% of Asians are Lactose intollarent, and unlike Europeans or other westerners, cows milk is pretty much absent in Asian cuisine. I am not making this up, many of my Asian friends have commented on this.

Gegogi, might want to add more to this...

I don't know if this would help, but I saw on a show a similar problem. The doctor said, it is not us that smell, but the amount of bacteria on us that make us smell. People with more body hair, tend to smell more than people with less. His suggestions were to wash/bathe with antibacterial soaps. Also, wash clothes with anti-bacterial soaps.
If you are hairy, (my suggestion) maybe you can experiement and try waxing/shaving one body part and see if there is a difference. Good luck!
Also, the doctor suggested that you use deodorant but not anti-perspirant.

i know this is true because i worked with a doctor up north twice a week at thew herbfarm. its a relatively common problem people came to have treated compared with some of the bigger health issues.
he stressed meat and dairy were important to take a break from, and water was a must because more people than not are dehydrated, especially if they are drinking caffeinated beverages.

Yes - I shower at least once a day thoroughly. I use soap. It's quite common here.
Sometimes I can small characteristic musky smell shortly after that. I use antiperspirant kind of deodorant, because regular ones seem to be less effective in my case.

Quote:

Yes, I'm sure it's not regular BO. It's a quite diferent smell. Actually there are two of them. One is what you might call musky, the other resembles that of stale urine I guess. Both match description of androstenol and androstenone (accordingly).
Diet? I thought about it earlier but I'm not sure if there's corelation.

Not that much.

It is something to consider. I tried to link theese things, but I'm not sure if there is any connection. For all I know and remember I can't see any pattern. It seems stress in not a factor - not important one anyway.
Can you be stressed unconsiously?

Actually the smell is the first sense I would give up if i had to choose.

Quote:

For all I know - nol and -none are the ones that can be smelled and have a quite distinctive well described aroma that closely match to my case.

My brother once was wondering what the musky smell might be.

I wish to have it under controll, that's all.
It doesn't matter if I'll put on fresh shirt every half an hour. It's not that.

It's not about plesentness or otherwise. It's about intensity. Though diet might be a factor. How would you describe smell caused by "all the good stuff"?

Exactly! If I can smell it...

The surface of your body is a culture medium for a variety of living things; your bodily secretions feed this culture.

I suggest that a well balanced culture normally doesn't produce such noticeable odor, not if the body is washed with any regularity.

So, I'd think that either your nose is unusually discriminating (and also, unusually, not desensitized to your own characteristic odor) OR that the culture on your skin is unbalanced.

If it's your nose that's unusually sensitive, then perhaps there are times when others notice your body odor, but it may be rare relative to how often you notice. You might be worried but have no real need to be so concerned.

If the culture is unbalanced, it could be the 'food' your body excretes to feed the culture. Diet, stress, dehydration are all good avenues to consider.

But one other possibility is that frequent showering with strong soaps over time has left your body-surface culture with a distorted population profile. You might consider just rinsing your body without soap (or with the smallest amount of mild soap possible, used only strategically and not all over) for a few weeks to allow the balance on your skin to self-correct.

the pH level of your skin and/or sweat secretions may also have something to do with it. If you have a naturally acidic chemistry, combined with (as MarkL said) an unbalanced population of naturally-occuring bacteria, this may be resulting in the smells you mention. There are books available on pH level in diet, and you can also test the pH of your own body (typically via saliva).

This may be helpful in determining what's going on.

Also, you might want to see a naturopath or a practicioner of Eastern Medicine so they can do things like read your irises and tongue to see if there are imbalances in your body, most likely caused by diet and/or physiological conditions. Keep us posted.
