Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in Maryland.

To the east, Autism Delaware is a Newark, Delaware-based nonprofit whose mission is to help individuals, including children, affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders. Its vision is that all people with Autism have opportunities to learn, grow and live full lives as included and valued members of their communities...

Record-breaking attendance and weather extremes were the hallmarks of the 2015 Walk for Autism. The annual event raises funds that benefit Autism Delaware's range of programs and services, including family
support, clinical services, advocacy, awareness, and the adult employment and community resources program known as POW&R (Productive Opportunities for Work & Recreation).

...Autism Delaware board president Marcy Kempner introduced five-year-old Jacob Pantano as the grand marshal before he led more than 900 walkers at the official start. The route through Cape Henlopen State Park had been shortened by request to 2.2 miles. At the finish line, walkers gathered in the celebration fun zone where hands-on crafts were enjoyed, courtesy of Home Depot...

Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of the last post is Autism Delaware, a Newark, Delaware-based nonprofit whose mission is to help individuals, including children, affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders.

Easter Seals Delaware & Maryland's Eastern Shore is a Delaware-based nonprofit that provides exceptional services, education, outreach, and advocacy so that people living with Autism and various other challenges can live, learn, work and play in its communities. Camp Fiarlee offers children with various challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorders, a place to try new things and discover their unrealised potential....
Quote:
Easter Seals Camp Fairlee has long lasting effects on the campers who walk its paths, like twelve-year-old Matthew, who has autism. He enjoys his week at Easter Seals Camp Fairlee so much he talks about it all year in anticipation for the upcoming summer. For his parents ...Camp Fairlee is a place they know is fun, exciting and, above all, safe.

Camp Fairlee -- Manor House

"Camp is something we talk about all year and it is something Matthew looks forward to all year," [his mother] says. "Camp Fairlee is the one place we can send him where we don't have to worry and that is priceless. Absolutely priceless!"

Easter Seals celebrates 'National Autism Awareness Month' in April and recognizes the many needs of the growing population of people whose lives are touched by autism either personally or by a family member. Easter Seals is taking strides to accommodate those needs through a myriad of services offered, including: adult day programs, supported employment services, children's therapy services, services for caregivers and especially through Camp Fairlee...

Camp Fairlee -- Cabins

While many individuals with autism attend traditional summer sessions, Camp Fairlee also offers specialized autism summer sessions, which have more than doubled the capacity since its inception. While children with autism enjoy swimming, singing and doing arts and crafts at one of Camp Fairlee's 1-on-1 respite weeks for children with autism, their parents can take some much needed time off from caregiving.

Matthew enjoys swimming, horseback riding, being around other kids he can relate to and hayrides. He learned so much in his horseback riding experience with Camp Fairlee that he is able to ride by himself with a group and it has become a favorite past time he shares with his mom back at home. Matthew has made friends with both campers and counselors that he connects with throughout the year.

Camp Fairlee -- Climbing Wall and Zip Line

Camp has had other positive affects in unexpected ways as well. While at Camp, Matthew has learned better sleeping habits and is more willing to try new foods, both for which his parents are thankful. Lori and Chris can relax while Matthew is at Camp knowing he is safe. They are able to enjoy time with each other when they can go out to dinner, do chores and sleep in.

"We are so grateful for Camp Fairlee. I couldn't imagine sending him anywhere else. We look forward to camp to not only give us a break from caregiving, but to give Matthew a break too. Camp is a place he can be around other kids and have fun," Lori says. "The staff are wonderfully amazing people that are there for the kids. We can tell they love what they do."

Easter Seal's Camp Fairlee outside of Chestertown, Maryland, is the only camp in the region that provides a typical residential camp experience for children and adults with disabilities year-round. Fairlee offers week-long camp sessions throughout the summer, Travel Trips throughout the year and weekend respite/retreat programs from August through May...

Easter Seals offers a range of services, including children's therapies, assistive technology, recreational camping, day programs for adults with physical or intellectual disabilities and respite services for When caregivers...

Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of the last couple of posts has been on Autism-related events and organisations in Delaware.

In nearby New York state, Extraordinary Ventures New York is a Mount Kisco, New York-based nonprofit that employs adults with Autism where they make and wrap decorative, scented candles for sale. The launch of EVNY is made possible through a start up grant from FECA, Foundation for Empowering Citizens with Autism...

Another way EV can expand its impact is to reach out and assist others around the country attracted to the EV model and interested in establishing jobs for adults in their home areas.

The EV model has the following pillars:

The jobs are designed around the skills and interests of the people.
The businesses focus on reliable needs and markets in the community.
The businesses are managed on strong professional business principles.
The organization breaks even with the support of an annual fund.

The EV Michigan Laundry Crew hard at work.

Put another way, the jobs are flexible, the businesses are 'real' -- not a social program, and the businesses generate enough income to support themselves, typically with some help in the early years from friends and families.

The promise is an organization that supports the employment needs of dozens of individuals who otherwise may be sitting at home, inactive, and unemployed.

To pursue this avenue of expansion, EV has entered into an exclusive joint venture arrangement with four groups who are each leaders in their own right in the autism world....

"We're very excited about it. These are top-drawer partners. They see the EV model as something they can do successfully and we can learn together," said former board member Gregg Ireland.

According to one of the partners, EV has a formula that can work in many places.

"Taking EV's advice, we've started with a laundry service on Oakland's campus. We've got four employees and a small but growing customer base," added Kemp.

In a few years, perhaps there will be a handful of organizations called 'Extraordinary Ventures' in other parts of the country. You are encouraged to stay tuned.
