Ah. Okay. I read through a few pages expecting something about using pheromones as a treatment for autism.

Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

LifeTown is based in New Albany, Ohio. LifeTown is NOT simply a 'field trip' -- it's where students apply the lesson plans they've worked on in advance in the classroom? and where they develop life skills they'll be able to transfer to their natural community environments...

"To see these kids come into class all jittery and wiggling and then become calm enough to do slow, 3-part breathing is almost magic," says Kelly Schulze, yoga teacher and coordinator of Together in Motion, a new program to help those in Central Ohio who are affected by autism.
"It was a total shock to us when our son was diagnosed," says Schulze. "He was our first, so everything was unfamiliar to us. When our daughter came along though, we couldn't help noticing the differences, and once we got the diagnosis, we got into the therapies that have helped us so much -- one being physical therapy."
Helping her son with his physical therapy gave Schulze the idea to create a yoga program for autistic children and their caregivers. For years, she had practiced some stretches with a Rodney Yee yoga video, but she noticed a big difference in herself after taking prenatal yoga class and then yoga teacher training at Yoga On High.
"I started seeing connections," she says. "I knew that learning to connect and self-calm so helps to relax the flight/fight reflexes and ease body functions."
After much work and research by Schulze and others at the Autism Society of Central Ohio (ASCO), a grant was received from the Hussman Foundation to create Together in Motion (TIM), a child-focused yoga program for autistic children age 12 and up, and their caregivers. The grant was small so they need lots of donated resources, including studio space. The first session was at ...Life Town in New Albany.
"For our next two series, we will be at Yoga on High/Grow Yoga," says Schulze. "Michelle Vinbury at Yoga on High has been fantastic and very supportive."
Besides her Yoga on High training, Schulze uses relaxation techniques developed by Louise Goldberg to help those on the autism spectrum.
"We do lots of moves to open tight chests which then helps with breathing, and that helps with the speech therapy," says Schulze. "I have also noticed balance really improve from month to month with the kids in the series. Feedback from parents shows that they are seeing real progress."
Besides the physical benefits, the kids also better their social skills. Schulze observed that, "They become much more tolerant, and now you can also see a community forming."
Schulze hopes to grow the program and have siblings and volunteer peers join in the classes.
"In a perfect world, I would love to have my daughter and other siblings practice with my son and other kids while the parents go practice something like Urban Zen and learn to take care of themselves."
Ginny Bryan of the Autism Society of Central Ohio said that she is, "super excited that the TIM Yoga program has been so successful."
The ASCO has a fundraiser ...at On the Border at Easton. 20% of all proceeds, including alcohol sales, on that day will go to the Autism Society Central Ohio.
