Ah. Okay. I read through a few pages expecting something about using pheromones as a treatment for autism.

Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

To the east, The Arc of Ulster-Greene is a Kingston, New York-based private not-for-profit agency founded by those who believed that their children with various challenges should have the same opportunities as their peers. Supporting individuals from preschool age, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders, its mission is ?to offer people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities opportunities to live and experience full lives.?...
Ulster-Greene ARC's Wall Street Day Services has opened a Snoezelen Room to benefit autistic adults regionally.

Snoezelen is a multisensory therapy room developed in the 1970s by two Dutch therapists to reduce apathy and agitation by providing a space that appeals to all the senses and allows the client to make choices nonverbally.

Snoezelen also has been used for those with dementia, post-traumatic stress disorder, intellectual or mental disabilities or even to boost relaxation and creativity among highly stressed corporate executives.

Last week, Janine Prisco, applied behavior science specialist, demonstrated the use of the room with one of the clients who receive services at the Wall Street center...

The woman receiving the session stood in the midde of the white room, looking at her fingernails and glancing around at the sparkling curtain, mirrors and a large reclining chair nearby. She didn't take a seat. The aro'a of vanilla wafted toward her soothingly. Images of fluidly moving colored swirls were projected on the wall. She dutifully looked at it but didn't respond. She sat at the edge of a carpeted box as the music changed to a more soothing melody. She picked up her feet and stroked the soles of each foot, noticing for the first time the spongy texture of the floor. Behind her a column of water began to bubble, alternating rays of colored light shining through it. Her eyes lit up.

She gazed in the mirror's reflecting image as the column color changed.
'Blue! Red! Yellow!' she labeled with abrupt outbursts.

She stood still and looked at her fingernails when Prisco switched to faster music. A change to slower tunes noticeably relaxed the woman, and she picked up textured toys and perched at the edge of the lounge chair to explore them. If she expressed interested in something, Prisco showed her how it works and how she can interact with it.

A Snoezelen Room can be customized to each client's needs, either soothing or stimulating, providing multisensory experiences, or helping a distracted client focus on one sense.

Dr. Sudi Kash, supervisor of UGARC's psychology services, secured $18,000 in funding for the room through the Hudson Valley Autism Society and the Klock Foundation. An equal amount of in-kind services for construction was contributed by staff members.

"It's not a luxury. It's a very effective component in the treatment of autism spectrum disorder if used properly," Kash said, citing positive research results for autistic, brain-injured or psychiatrically impaired clients.
Kristin Harrell, manager of day services, was enthusiastic about giving up a room in her section of the building for the project. "I thought about what we could do for our folks and how much they could grow from it," Harrell said.
Both Harrell and Prisco received their Snoezelen training from occupational therapist Linda Messbauer, founding member of the American Association of Multi-sensory Environments.
She is a trainer for Snoezelen Rooms.
After the demonstration session, Prisco asked what the woman noticed about her experience.
"I felt like I was going on a trip," she said earnestly. "I'd like to come back again another time."
