Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

Special Kids Therapy is a northwest Ohio-based nonprofit that provides support, financial assistance, as well as programs and activities for those with with special health care needs, including children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Special Kids Therapy, primarily a funding organisation, provides grants to pay for all sorts of opportunities for kids with special needs...
Quote:
"We do not cater to any one diagnosis. Every child, no matter how great or small their disability, we're here for them," said the Karen Rettig, director of Special Kids Therapy.

The name of the organization says it all. The multi-sensory room with its flickering lights, moving parts and fun games offers these special kids something they can't get anywhere else.

Parent [Tammy] Eisenreich said, "I can't say enough about what they do for all kids with special needs -- not just autism, but all kids with special needs."

...John was diagnosed with autism when he was two, but the speech therapy he needed wasn't covered by insurance.

"We did the appeals process. I think I had two different appeals, and they were both denied. As a parent, you're like, 'You don't know what's best for my child.' So we applied for a grant through Special Kids Therapy and they were amazing," said John's mother Tammy.

Special Kids Therapy has funded [various recreational activities.]

"My mission, my goal is to reach these children for them to have opportunities to be accepted and part of life. I think as we accept things -- not only does it improve their life, it improves our life also," said Rettig.

...Although the organization is 100 percent volunteer, they need money to offer services.

...Board Member Karla Lewis has worked for months to put it all together. She tells us, "That's the prize at the end. When I get to see the smiles on those kids faces when they ...add equipment to the playroom or expand the services, that's when we'll say all the literal blood, sweat and tears that we've put into this is

The Children's Center for Developmental Enrichment (CCDE) is a Westerville, Ohio-based nonprofit whose services, through its school Oakstone Academy, include early intervention services for children from birth to age 3. The city of Westerville is home to one of the few schools in the U.S. founded on the principle of providing a truly inclusive environment for children with autism spectrum disorders...
Oakstone Academy, located on South State Street, has created a school where students with autism are full participants in the classroom with peers who do not have disabilities.

[At least] three families of children with [Autism Spectrum Disorders] ...founded the Children's Center for Developmental Enrichment (CCDE) in 1999. CCDE's goal was to develop an educational model based on the inclusion of students with [Autism Spectrum Disorders] and their typically developing peers.

CCDE opened its doors to students in 2000, and opened Oakstone Academy, named for the street on which the first building was located, in 2002. This year, Oakstone Academy graduated its seventh senior class.

The process of starting a school from scratch, especially one based on a new education model, is no easy task. The education model Oakstone uses is called Social Immersion.

...Social Immersion classrooms consist of 18-20 children, two teachers and an assistant. Usually, seven or eight of the students in a classroom have [Autism Spectrum Disorders]. Students can apply for enrollment in Oakstone Academy as early as preschool, and the school touts that about 80 percent of the students who begin there as preschoolers thrive in the Social Immersion model.

Oakstone Academy draws students from all over the Columbus area -- 18 local school districts in the 2016-17 school year -- with some traveling from as far as Marysville, Newark and Mt. Gilead on a daily basis. There are even families moving to central Ohio from across the U.S. to attend the school.

...Oakstone Academy refers to its neurotypical students without [Autism Spectrum Disorders] as 'peers,' and this group of students is an important part of the school's success.

This past year, Oakstone Academy served 550 children across all grades, and 280 of those children have [Autism Spectrum Disorders]. Students at Oakstone have many opportunities available to them through the school.

...Starting in fifth grade, students may participate in theater, and boys' basketball and girls' volleyball are available beginning in sixth grade in addition to clubs for ultimate Frisbee, running and bowling. High school boys and girls may run cross country and join the swim team, and the boys can also choose basketball, while girls can play volleyball...

Oakstone Academy is also very focused on character education and student leadership as principles of the Social Immersion model, and there are programs that students can participate in beginning in middle school to help further themselves in these areas...
Here is a link to a video from Oakstone's spring concert from last year, featuring children from kindergarten age singing Oakstone's song: https://www.facebook.com/31851929746...3853305742468/

Ah. Okay. I read through a few pages expecting something about using pheromones as a treatment for autism.

Default 'Agricultural specialisterne': rural employment revolution for those with Autism

The subject of recent posts has mainly been on Autism-related events and organisations in the state of Ohio.

Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy, based in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, tries to help those, including children, affected by Autism Spectrum Disorders...

Nearly 70 families with an autistic child will receive financial aid from the National Autism Association Northeast Ohio Chapter.

When a child has an autism label, it's sometimes an uphill battle with health insurance companies to get them to pay for treatments such as speech therapy, occupational therapy or biomedical, said Don Pattison, president of the NAA-NEO.

"They don't think it's curable," he said.

Pattison's group has worked to raise funds to help these families. All 68 applicants were awarded some amount for the care of their autistic child. The recipients include families in Willoughby, Painesville, Mentor, Chester Township, Wickliffe, Mayfield Heights and South Euclid.

Pattison is the father of an autistic son.

"Of the 68 applications, $60,000 worth of total need was based on the amount of the application received," he said.

Requests [were up] to $1,000. All who requested $ 300 were given the full amount, while most who requested the higher amounts were given half, with the hopes that recent fundraisers will allow the group to award the rest, he said. Money is paid directly to the service provider the family requests.

"No one was turned down, but those who didn't make it in that funding cycle are on a waiting list," he said, adding that $21,000 has been awarded so far. "Some people on the waiting list are for summer camps, and they don't need funding right now."

Families' requests ranged from money for speech and occupation therapy to money for sending the child to a special-needs summer program. Others requested it just to help with therapies or for schools with special programs.

Many of the funds came through as monetary donations, but Cleveland Heights-based Lee Silsby Compounding Pharmacy donated $500 worth of compounds to an area family that is treating their child biomedically.

The group hopes to raise more funds through two benefit concerts planned for February. Todd Snider, who won the 2006 Top Album honors by Rolling Stone Magazine, will perform at 7 p.m. Feb. 29... Tim Easton... also will perform.

In addition, Easton will perform at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in Akron. Tickets are $30 for the Beachland show and $20 for the Akron concert. All proceeds go to NAA-NEO to help these families...

"It's a really good fundraiser, and hopefully, we could hit the waiting list," he said. "If not, we could prioritize based on financial need."

The group also is seeking corporate sponsorship.

"None of our funding is from government sources," Pattison said.

Autism is a neurological disorder that affects as many as one in every 150 children. It causes significant problems with social skills, behavior and communication. Necessary interventions for these children can cost as much as $70,000 a year, with insurance companies typically paying very little, according to the NAA-NEO...
